Suicide rates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are based on the number of people who have committed suicide per every 100,000 people within the population. Since they are consistently based on groups of 100,000 each year, these rates take changes in population size into account and allow for comparisons from one year to the next.

The chart below shows the overall suicide rate in the United States for each year between 1999 and 2007. In 2007, the suicide rate was 11.26 per every 100,000 people.

Additional information about suicide can be found on NIMH’s suicide fact sheet and on NIMH’s suicide prevention page.
